Adelante Mujeres’ Chicas Youth Development Program and Experiencia Ecológica
For 18 years, the Chicas afterschool program run by Adelante Mujeres at 28 schools in Washington County, has been a haven for young Latine girls—a space apart from their daily lives where they feel safe to learn and grow. But Chicas has always been more than a clubhouse. Through Experiencia Ecológica, it’s also the Chicas’ gateway to nature.

Beyond Toxics
In Eugene, the nonprofit Beyond Toxics is fueling a grassroots movement for a safe, healthy, toxic-free Oregon for all. Because communities of color experience more pollution and have less of a seat at the table, Beyond Toxics focuses on empowering the communities most impacted, beginning with the youth. A unique ten-week paid internship program trains students on how public policy happens so they can become the leaders of our future.

Yakona Nature Preserve & Learning Center
On the edge of Newport near the Pacific Ocean sits the Yakona Nature Preserve & Learning Center, an experimental forest where high school students sample a variety of natural resource careers and become land stewards. A Nexus for Geography Education Helps Oregon Teachers—and Their Students—See the World Picture this: 20 fifth graders are running in the school gym, but instead of sneakered feet on glossy maple wood, they’re in bare and socked feet running on top of an enormous 14- by 21-foot durable fabric map.
