At its peak, before the community faced frequent ICE raids, upwards of 100 elementary-aged kids and their parents would meet at Fernhill Wetlands; now around 50 come on a Saturday to learn from the Bird Alliance about the diverse ducks, geese, swans, and other voyagers seeking rest and forage. Teenage volunteers—members of Adelante’s Chicas Youth Development Program—guide walks, lead activities, and load a table in fluffy conchas, colorful sugar-crusted buns as light as air. This pairing of migrating birds and beloved Mexican pastries encapsulates the purpose of the event: to make Latine community members feel welcome and at home in outdoor natural areas. “These are nature spaces where our Latine community has been historically excluded,” Regalado says. Their office building in Forest Grove is covered in large metal Monarch butterflies, glinting in the morning sun as though alighting on the brick before continuing to flutter south. Adelante has anchored the Latine community in Washington County since 2002, when a community organizer and a nun came together to hold a class for 15 mothers to learn English. Organically, this class revealed adjacent needs: childcare and business training. In the 20-plus years since, the organization has maintained its focus on holistic education and empowerment for Latine women and families. Currently, they serve over 22,000 people each year through programs in education, micro-enterprise, regenerative agriculture, mental health, and recently, an expanded focus on leadership and advocacy—including a legal clinic and rapid response teams.",[],{"_key":245,"_type":8,"asset":33,"children":246,"markDefs":251,"style":21},"a25e9e31bd1c",[247],{"_key":248,"_type":12,"marks":249,"text":250},"61078b3fdc50",[],"Pajaritos y Pan Dulce is one of many multi-generational nature events that Regalado organizes under the banner of Experiencia Ecológica. Adelante’s founding principles include taking care of the earth, in keeping with deep cultural traditions to love and respect nature. In March, Polizadores y Pupusas brings the Bird Alliance out to Fernhill Wetlands again to share about both pollinators and medicinal native plants, which families gather to bring home. In the summer, Rumba al River with Tualatin River Keepers takes families kayaking for the first time and concludes in an epic potluck of tostadas or carne asada. Eighteen years later, Chicas serves 700 youth from grades 3 to 12 at 28 schools through weekly afterschool programs. Once a week, when the bell rings, around 30 “Chicas” meet in classrooms with a Latine woman, typically in her 20s, who’s undeniably adult but with the nearness of youth. Her first job is to create a warm, welcoming atmosphere where, for the next hour-plus, these Chicas feel safe being themselves.",[],{"_key":261,"_type":8,"asset":33,"children":262,"markDefs":267,"style":21},"5ad109d94987",[263],{"_key":264,"_type":12,"marks":265,"text":266},"9f75cd88d53a",[],"In an Adelante office on the second floor, four Youth Advocates reflect on their experiences mentoring Latine girls. Viviana Tellez, in a sharp pink blazer, tells me, “every youth deserves someone who sees their potential before they can see it themselves.” Tellez signed her elementary-aged Chicas up for a Portland State University program called THORNovation For weeks, they designed and built their own inventions—LED bouquets and novel pet toys—and then presented them at a showcase, facing their own nerves and practicing public speaking. Soft-spoken Gabriela Hernandez, who grew up in Bend without programs like Chicas to support her, places acute focus on mental health, giving her students a place to work through uncomfortable experiences in school. Self-possessed Lupita Aguilar, formerly a Chica herself, recalls the moment she realized one of her cohorts, who were first-generation students, wanted to speak entirely in Spanish rather than Spanglish. She readily agreed. Through Experiencia Ecológica, the Chicas participate in habitat restoration and tree planting near their homes. Seniors who’ve been with the program for years go snowshoeing through a partnership with Adventure Without Limits. “It’s all about planting the seed,” Regalado explains. “When you feel connected to the earth, you get a sense of responsibility to take care of it.” The recent data center planned for Forest Grove may pull water from Fernhill Wetlands—the site of many Experiencia Ecológica events. Partner organizations join to lead sessions—everything from visiting a farm to dance therapy. For the last two days, Youth Advocates take the older 25 to 30 girls camping. They pitch tents borrowed from the zoo on the Sandy River in Gresham and spend all afternoon playing in the water. The following morning, they make arroz con leche together and hike in the nearby woods. Along the river, the pressures of their daily lives become remote. Through continuity and vision, Chicas has become more than an afterschool program; it manifests a way to move through the world as a Latine woman, valuing community and sisterhood and offering back. Chicas learn that they belong here, as part of multigenerational stories of migration.
